Chapter 25
The next morning, Felicia woke up with a start. She’d been dreaming, and in her dream, she was flying. Or she had been flying. When she woke up, she was falling from a great height. Nora and Hob were too far away to reach her in time, and she knew her wing had broken. She sat up and stretched, reminding herself she didn’t have wings.
Glancing over at the book, she saw it was still open on the last page she’d been reading. What magical charms had to do with flying she wasn’t sure, but maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep a few with her. She looked more closely at the book.
“A four-leaf clover…well, that’s no surprise,” she said out loud. “Although, a willow leaf folded in half is a new one.” She turned the page. “And I have no idea how I’m supposed to find a spotted mushroom cap that’s been growing in the shade of an oak. Wait, these are oaks. This might work.”
Nora knocked and opened the door. “Sorry to barge in, but I thought I heard you talking to someone.”
“Just myself,” Felicia admitted. “I do that sometimes. One reason I was so glad when I thought you were a cat. Less odd if people think you’re talking to someone…or something.” Felicia smiled. “But I’m very glad you turned out to be someone who could talk back. I much prefer a two-way conversation.”
Nora smiled back. “Oliver did that sometimes. He always said talking to one’s self is a sign of intelligence.”
“That sounds good to me,” Felicia said, standing up and walking over to the window. “Do we have any spotted mushrooms growing around here?”
“Whatever for?” Nora asked, then glanced at the book. “Not the spotted mushroom growing in the shade of an oak again?” She shook her head. “I don’t know where that started, but I can tell you it’s not true.” She rolled her eyes. “Hob caught me trying it once, and he still teases me about it.”
“Where is Hob?” Felicia turned back from the window. “Or is he going to meet us later?”
“He went to the portal to send a message to Harris.” At Felicia’s look, she added, “Don’t worry. He took a few pixie guards with him. The faeries won’t give them any trouble.”
“That’s good,” Felicia replied, letting out a breath. “Do you think we’ll have any trouble tonight?”
“Not during the ball,” Nora said. “We’ll have to come up with a plan to look for the apprentice if he’s not at the ball.” She hesitated. “I think Hob is working on that this afternoon.”
“What should we do?” Felicia asked. Trying not to think about her dream, she added, “I’d like to keep busy.”
